Hydraulic Excavator Operation (As Lifting Machine)

Course Overview

Test Requirements
Test Level Written Practical
  • 1 Day test duration (take turn, include waiting time);
  • Practical project assessment consist of 6 parts;
  • Part 1: Perform pre-operation inspection (oral assessment in 10 mins) – candidate to verbally list out the items to be inspected and to explain how to carry out the inspection on selected items chosen by the assessor.
  • Part 2: Maneuver and parking of plant (within 5 mins) – candidate to maneuver the plant through the excavator test circuit and to park the plant in designated position as indicated in the drawing.
  • Part 3: Maneuver Slope and Transfer Loads (within 20 mins) – candidate to lift and transfer loads from point to point, with no travelling with load is allowed.
  • Part 4: Set trench boundary (5 mins) – candidate to mark out the trench in accordance to test drawing using pegs.
  • Part 5: Excavate, backfill and level up ground surface (in 50 mins) – candidate to excavate the trench in 30 mins and backfill in another 20 mins.
  • Part 6: Perform post operation procedure – candidate to maneuver the plant to correct resting position before shutting down the engine.
  • Candidates’ performance will be assessed in accordance to the Assessment Criteria by BCA testers;
Scope of Training/Assessment
Test Level Written Practical
  • 6 hrs (2 evenings 5.30-8.30pm)
  • General knowledge on earthworks, surveying, and soil mechanics;
  • Excavator Parts and steering modes;
  • Basic system pre-operation check and basic maintenance; Operation safety and good practices in excavation; Interpret drawings, calculate earth quantities, levels, slopes and width of excavation;
  • General safety;
  • Lifting Operation with Excavator;
  • Load Capacity Chart interpretation and calculation
  • 2 days (8.30am-5.30pm each day)
  • Trainees will be briefed on BCA Assessment Criteria for Test Project;
  • Trainer will go through in details with the trainees the pre-operation and post operation checks in Excavator Operations;
  • Trainer will go through with the trainees the requirements while maneuvering the excavator through test circuit with the candidates;
  • Trainer will go through with the trainees the method of accurately marking out the trench to project tolerances, the procedure to excavate the marked trench, the placement of excavated earth, and the positioning of the excavator, the do and don’t during back-filling and other requirements;
  • The trainer will demonstrate to the trainees the correct procedure to perform load transfer from point to point and maneuver the excavator over the ramp, and checking on the Load Indicator Chart to ensure the lifting operation is within the safe working capacity of the excavator. Travelling with load during excavator operation is strictly not allowed under MOM’s safety regulations.
  • Trainees are expected to familiar with all the various control levers of the 20-ton excavator before allowed to perform further practice on the various parts of the test project.
  • At the end of the 2-day training, trainees should be able operate the excavator smoothly, understand the requirements for maneuvering the excavator through test circuit, correct method of load transfer and maneuvering over the ramp, method of marking out the trench profile, quality requirements for the excavated trench, backfilling procedures and requirements, able to recite the pre-operation and post operation checks, within the stipulated time for each part of the test projects.
  • Trainees will be advised to sign up for more practical lessons prior to the test to ensure that they are able to acquire the required skills and speed to complete the test projects.
  • Mandatory requirement under new MOM regulations for Excavator Operator to qualified under HEO(LM) course.
  • Suitable for workers with basic experience in operating excavator or other heavy machinery;
  • Suitable for existing Excavator Operators to upgrade themselves to HEO(LM) certification.
  • Must passed both written and practical test to be qualified as CoreTrade personnel (Tradesman).
  • 100% passing is required for load chart interpretation and calculation questions.
